Why Should Black Americans Celebrate Mia Love?
By Chidike Okeem
The suggestion that Mia Love’s election as the first black Republican congresswoman is something that should stimulate great jubilation in the hearts of black Americans is utterly preposterous. Indeed, Love’s election is an event as important to black Americans as the announcement of the Album of the Year winner at the recent Country Music Awards. Mia Love was voted in to represent predominantly white citizens in Utah’s 4th congressional district. This may be a huge personal accomplishment for her, but it means nothing to black Americans. The notion that black people ought to be doing gymnastic flips in celebration of this is poppycock.
